Stompers Win Berth to the 2010 Premier National Championships
June 28, 2010
STOCKTON, CALIF. – The Valley Stompers qualified for the 2010 Premier National Championship Tournament to be held in Southern California August 9-14, where the championship game is to be televised on ESPN and all games will be internet streamed or tracked. The Stompers qualified by winning one of six berths at the Premier Girls Fastpitch (PGF) qualifier held in Stockton on June 25-27. A total of 22 teams competed for the coveted berths.
With a little luck and some well played softball, the Stompers won their berth by winning two games in their flight over AASA and the Strike Zone. Through the luck of the tournament draw, the Stompers received a first round by in their flight and had to wait for the winner of the AASA/RR Gold game before beginning their tournament.
AASA prevailed in the first round and got off to a good start vs. the Stompers in the second round, scoring twice in the first inning. Katelyn Linford pitching for the Stompers settled down after the 1st and did not allow another run and only two hits for the remainder of the game. The Stompers were held scoreless until the top of the 7th. The inning started with a strike out but was followed by a base hit by Katelyn. She was forced out at second on the next play leaving the Stompers down by 2 with only one out remaining and the tieing running at the plate. Kat Tomsic started the two out rally with a single to left, followed by single to center by Olivia Grewal , which loaded the bases for Andi Quilalang . On the first pitch Andi saw, she lined a base hit to left which allowed Olivia Haney to score. With the bases still loaded and the tieing run at 3rd, and the go ahead run at 2nd, Jessica Catson drove a ball to left field plating the game tieing and go ahead runs. Katelyn closed out the Stompers 3-2 victory by striking out the last two batters with the tieing run at 3rd and winning run at 2nd.
In the qualifying game the Stompers faced the Strike Zone from Oakley, Ca. In the bottom of the 1st, runs scored by Jessica and Joelle Williams got the ball rolling. However the Strike Zone answered quickly with two runs of their own in the top of the 2nd. It stayed that way until the top of the 6th when the Strike Zone scored a go ahead run. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and time not on their side the Stompers mounted another rally. It was Déjà vu all over again as Katelyn reach based on a walk to start the home half of the sixth and was quickly forced out. Kat followed with a base hit putting runners at 1st and 3rd. Kat promptly stole 2nd putting the winning run in scoring position with one out. Next up was Bit Whisler, and on a 1-1 count she delivered with a game winning two rbi double to left center field. After a pop out, Jessica put the icing on the win with a double of her own scoring Bit and putting the Stompers up by two, securing their berth to the 2010 Premier National Championships.
Memorable Start at Memorial Day Classic
June 1, 2010
MANTECA, CALIF – The question about whether or not the Stompers would be able to start their season was answered Wednesday when the California Grizzlies fell to Newark Memorial. The bad luck for the Grizzlies was good news for the Stompers as three girls were released from their high school season and were eligible to play with the Stompers in the RR Gold Memorial Day Classic (MDC) tournament.
The Stompers started off their travel ball season with an 8am, 9am, and 12:30pm Saturday pool schedule—and the moans could be heard from miles around because of the early morning wakeup. Those moans quickly turned to cheers as Andi Quilalang's four hit shutout performance, with support by an RBI by Jessica Catson and a late inning RBI double by Olivia Haney, gave the Stompers their first win of the season over the Roseville Heat.
Game two put the Stompers up against the CC Comets. A dominant outing in the circle by Katelyn Linford lead the way with a one hit shutout. The Stompers bats started to come to life as well as they pounded out eight hits, including triples by Katelyn and Joelle Williams, who was 3 for 4 in the game. Also contributing with an RBI single was Serena Wong, who was added to the Stomper roster to make the minimum nine players available for Saturday’s games.
The last game of the day was against SJ Lady Sharks, and once again pitching was the soup de jour. Andi stepped in the circle and delivered a two hit shutout. A two RBI single delivered by Joelle gave Andi all the runs needed for the win.
The Stompers finished their first Saturday 3-0 with the goal of being in the gold bracket on Monday, but first they had to finish out their pool on Sunday vs. the Fresno Force and SB Stars.
The 8am Sunday morning game brought a pleasant surprise as three more players returned from their high school playoffs. Sarah Weber, Bit Whisler, and Carly Weisenberg all from Monte Vista High were back in Stompers uniforms after falling to #1 seed Freedom, 8-3 late Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCS playoffs. That left only Olivia Grewal, whose Bishop O’Dowd Dragons were scheduled to play in the NCS Div-III championship game on the following Saturday, unavailable.
Sunday morning also brought in the Fresno Force, whose pitcher dominated the Stompers with her excellent control. The Stompers managed one hit off the Force pitcher. Katelyn matched the performance of her counterpart by giving up only two hits; however, the Stompers allowed an unearned run in the first inning and that was enough to hand the Stompers their first loss of the season.
Next on tap were the SB Stars and another four hit shutout by Andi. The Monte Vista crew, including Kat Tomsic, produced two runs on three hits and a key sacrifice bunt in the 3-0 win.
The final win left the Stompers 4-1 in their bracket and on a crash course for the Silver Bracket, but as luck would have it the Force fell to the Roseville Heat and a late afternoon win by the Heat in their final game would propel the Stompers to the Gold bracket by virtue of the 3-way tie, with the second tie-breaker going to the Stompers because of fewest runs allowed (1 run on Sat. & Sun.). As luck would have it, the Heat lost their final game and the Stompers went to the Silver Bracket.
First up in the Championship bracket on Monday was the WB Nuggets who went up 1-0 in the first inning on a shaky start by Katelyn. Fortunately, the stompers were determined to not repeat what happened Sunday against the Force by proceeding to pound out 10 hits including two doubles, two triples, and the first homer of the year by Joelle. After the first inning, Katelyn settled down and only gave up two hits and two runs as the Stompers went on to win 10-2. Along with Joelle, Andi and Jessica each had two hits in the game.
In the semi-final game, the Stompers took on Line Drive who were just coming off a win over the Valley Stompers–Chase team. The Valley Stompers-Williams team wasted no time by jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Joelle’s two run homer, her second in two at consecutive at bats. Behind the nine strikeout and shutout performance of Andi, and key hits by Andi and Kat, the Stompers went on to win 8-0 and on to the championship.
In the final against TNT, the Stompers exploded with five runs in the first inning capped by a 3-run homer by Kelsey Nyland. In the 5th, the Stompers completed the run rule game by putting across four more runs highlighted by a pinch hit RBI single by Marie Hunt. Andi and Carly each had three hits while Sarah and Jessica each had two hits. This ended the long weekend and showed that the Valley Stompers were indeed a team that could play and compete.
Travel Ball Season Begins…Or Does It?
May 25, 2010
SAN RAMON, CALIF. – The 2010 valley stompers are scheduled to start their summer campaign at the RR Gold Memorial Day Classic (MDC), however, those plans may be be put on hold as 7 of the team members may still be competing in their high school North Coast Section (NCS) Championships.
Olivia Grewal and her #1 seeded Bishop O’Dowd Dragons have earned a bye in the Division III playoffs and won’t play their first game until Saturday May 29, the first day of the MDC. Six other players in Division I of the NCS have a round one game Wednesday night, and with wins would also be unavailable for day 1 of the MDC: Joelle Williams, Andi Quilalang, and Jessica Catson of the #3 seeded California Grizzlies take on Newark Memorial; Bit Whisler, Sarah Weber, and Carly Weisenberg of the #8 seeded Monte Vista Mustangs take on Castro Valley.
The games will be watched with mixed emotions as all the teams have what it takes to go all the way, but everyone is excited to start the summer season.

Joe Williams takes over the 14U team!
November 6, 2009
SAN RAMON, CALIF. – Coach Joe Williams takes over the head coaching responsibilities for the wildly successful Valley Stompers 14U team. Former head coach, Matt Nyland, decided to step down after two years of leading the team to very respectable 13th place finishes in the ASA Western Nationals in 2008 and 2009.
Joe was a popular and natural successor for the head coaching position after being an assistant coach for the team the past two years. Joe has a true love for the game that he wants to share and foster with those around him.
Like many dads, Joe has been coaching youth sports on and off since his kids could pick up a ball. Joe played sports in high school with baseball being his primary sport, which lead to a scholarship to the University of San Francisco. Joe graduated from USF and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Joe states that some of his goals for this team are to ensure that the team is having fun competing, to develop and enhance lasting softball skills, and to prepare the team and individuals for their optimal level of play. Also as with all Stompers teams, qualify and compete well at Nationals.
